Cardiac Rehabilitation

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Weiss Memorial Hospital offers a team approach to your recovery.  Healing your heart and helping you return to an active lifestyle is the top goal.  The program is designed for persons who have suffered from heart disease, including those who have had a heart attack, angina, angioplasty, or cardiac surgery.  These patients benefit from a personalized program with a high staff-to-patient ratio.  The program focuses on strengthening the heart muscle and improving cardiovascular fitness to help patients recover from the heart disease.

Weiss Memorial cardiologists lead the cardiac rehabilitation program team.  In addition to the physician, the experienced medical team includes an exercise physiologist and two nurses specializing in cardiology.  As experts in cardiovascular rehabilitation, they share their knowledge to help you make a healthy recovery.

Our Three-Phase Program

Phase I – In Hospital

Cardiac rehabilitation begins immediately in the form of one-on-one educational discussions and counseling between you and the cardiac rehabilitation staff.  The purpose of phase one is to reduce the effects associated with prolonged bed rest while monitoring cardiac status.  Exercise therapy consists of range of motion activities and intermittent sitting and standing.

Phase II – Outpatient Exercise Therapy

Phase two normally begins with three weeks after hospital discharge.  This phase is broken down into one-hour sessions, three times a week, for 12 weeks.  The exact hours you attend are arranged by you and the cardiovascular rehabilitation staff.

The physician and rehab staff determine the cardiac exercise right for you.  All phase two patients exercise within the prescribed exercise intensity range and are continuously monitored.

Phase III – Continued Outpatient Exercise Therapy

Our team develops a long-term health care plan for you that includes dietary guidelines and a supervised exercise program.  They work together with your personal physician, who then follows your progress.  Those with risk factors for heart disease may also enter phase three.

Personal Treatment
You benefit from the personal attention given to you at Weiss as you work toward building a healthy heart.  Our team works closely with you to design a program that meets your specific needs.  The individualized program works to enhance your whole body, including flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness.  During your exercise sessions, your heart rate and rhythm are continuously monitored.

Make Progress At Your Own Pace

When designing your rehabilitation program, our team takes into consideration your medical history, current physical condition, and lifestyle.  They will help you become more physically fit at your own pace.  You’ll work on equipment designed to enhance your heart function.  And, you’ll gradually build a stronger heart and learn to develop and maintain a lifelong commitment to your health.

For your safety, our medical professionals closely monitor the exertion placed on your heart during your sessions here.  They also have full cardiopulmonary resuscitation capabilities if necessary.

Insurance Coverage

Most health insurance policies cover treatment in phases one and two if patients are enrolled between six months to one year after hospitalization following a heart attack, cardiac surgery, or coronary angioplasty.  Persons suffering form angina may also enroll.  Be sure to check with your insurance company to confirm coverage.  Phase three is not covered by insurance.
